Himachal CM Sets Jan 2027 Deadline for First Phase of 450-MW Hydroelectric Project

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the 450-MW Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project on the Satluj river during his two-day visit to Kinnaur district. On arrival, he inspected the powerhouse, surge shaft, and barrage areas and interacted with engineers and workers at the site.

Instructions to complete the first phase by January 2027

The Chief Minister directed officials to expedite construction work and complete the first phase of the project by January 2027. He said the entire project is targeted to be completed by the end of this financial year.

Emphasis on Clean Energy and Development

The Chief Minister stated that the state government is committed to strengthening the clean energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable development is a priority. He stated that the project will significantly contribute to increasing the state’s power generation capacity, strengthening energy self-sufficiency, and promoting environmentally friendly development.

75% work completed, construction continues at a fast pace

He stated that despite various challenges, the government has advanced the project through improved monitoring and planning. Approximately 75 percent of the work has been completed so far. Key civil works such as the barrage, headrace tunnel, and powerhouse are in the final stages, while electro-mechanical work is also progressing as per schedule.

Boost to the state’s economy

Upon completion, the project is expected to generate approximately 1,579 million units of electricity annually, strengthening the state’s energy capacity and grid stability. Additionally, the project could contribute approximately ₹900 crore annually to Himachal Pradesh’s economy.

Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, Chief Minister’s Secretary Ashish Singhmar, Managing Director of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited Abid Hussain Sadiq, Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Sharma, Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar Sharma, and other officials were also present.
