Cold Wave Intensifies in Himachal: Plains Colder Than Shimla as Dry Spell Persists

Due to an ongoing cold wave, night temperatures in the plains of Himachal Pradesh have dropped below those of hill stations. Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 6.6°C, while several lower-altitude areas experienced much colder conditions.

Sub-Zero Temperatures in Many Regions

Sundernagar in Mandi recorded 1.5°C, Bhuntar in Kullu 1.3°C, Kalpa in Kinnaur 0.0°C, Solan 0.6°C, Hamirpur 1.4°C, and Barthi 0.3°C. Dharamshala recorded 3.2°C, while Una and Palampur saw lows of 2.0°C each.

Meanwhile, Kukumsari in Lahaul-Spiti recorded a low of -7.4 degrees Celsius, while Tabo recorded a low of -7.7 degrees Celsius.

Fog and Cold Wave to Continue

According to the Meteorological Department, until significant rainfall and snowfall occur in the mountains, fog and cold waves will continue to plague the plains.

No Major Rainfall Expected Soon

The lack of rain and snowfall this winter is making the situation increasingly worrisome. The state has received 96 per cent less rainfall than normal in November, 99 per cent less in December, and 88 per cent less rainfall so far in January. There is no hope of significant rainfall in the next week. However, light snowfall may occur in higher elevations between January 16th and 19th.

Residents Await Rain and Snowfall

However, the dry spell of more than three months in most parts shows no signs of ending. This is affecting not only farmers and orchardists but also the tourism industry. The lack of snowfall is also troubling those involved in the tourism industry. This is already affecting wheat, apple orchards, and other crops. The state’s residents have been waiting patiently for rain and snowfall for a long time.
