Himachal Pradesh declared Disaster-Affected State as rains, Landslides claim multiple lives

Shimla, Sep 1: Himachal Pradesh has been declared a disaster-affected state. In view of the damage caused by continuous rains and landslides, Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu announced this during the assembly session on Monday.

A father and daughter died when a house collapsed in Junga, Shimla late on Sunday night. A 23-year-old girl died after being buried under a house collapse in Jubbal’s Badhal village.

An elderly woman Kalavati lost her life in Kotkhai when her house collapsed. A house collapsed in Shaimi of Sirmaur due to the falling of huge rocks from the hill. This also resulted in the death of a woman.

Four families were shifted to safer places after a landslide threatened their homes in Rohru’s Dayar Moli village at night. Two houses also collapsed in Hamirpur’s Chabutra village last night.

On the other hand, fresh snowfall occurred in Shinkula Pass of Lahaul Spiti today (Monday) morning. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for rain in 6 districts Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Una, Mandi and Sirmaur. There is an orange alert in Chamba, Kullu and Shimla.

In view of the heavy rain alert and the poor condition of roads, a holiday has been declared today in all the educational institutions of Shimla, Sirmour, Solan, Kangra, Mandi, Chamba, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Una and Banjar, Manali and Kullu sub-divisions of Kullu. Educational institutions will remain closed in Kullu on September 2 as well.
