Himachal: Disproportionate assets case against BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma; Vigilance registers FIR.

The Vigilance Bureau is investigating the assets amassed over the last decade—including a palatial house in Rakkar—by Sudhir Sharma, the BJP MLA and former minister from Dharamshala. Sharma, who served as a minister in the Virbhadra government, faces allegations of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The Vigilance Bureau has registered an FIR against him under three separate sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, covering the period from 2013 to 2023.

During the preliminary inquiry, financial and asset-related documents obtained from government departments (such as Income Tax and the Public Works Department) and other agencies were examined. These included income tax returns, election affidavits, property records, documents related to house-building advances, and asset valuation reports from competent authorities.

The investigation revealed, prima facie, that the public servant’s assets and expenditures appeared to exceed his declared legitimate income. According to the Bureau, a reconciliation of the records provided sufficient grounds to register a criminal case and initiate a formal investigation.

Scrutiny of MLA and former minister’s movable and immovable assets and transactions
The scope of the Vigilance investigation encompasses banking records, movable and immovable assets, investments, digital evidence, and other financial transactions. Additionally, a technical assessment of the expenditure incurred on the house’s construction, interiors, fixtures, and furnishings will be conducted. Should the investigation uncover the involvement of any other individual, appropriate legal action will be taken against them as well. The investigation into the case, registered by ASP Brahmadas Bhatia, has been assigned to Inspector Naresh Kumar.

Responding to the FIR, BJP leader Sudhir Sharma stated, “I am currently visiting Delhi and will provide a detailed response upon my return. This action is motivated by personal vendetta; Sukhu has already had me investigated twice by the Vigilance Bureau and once by another agency. I have cooperated fully; let them scrutinize whatever they wish, but they should ensure their own and their associates’ documents are also in order. Truth fears no fire.”
