Himachal Pradesh: The Governor of Himachal Pradesh Kavinder Gupta conferred State Awards on 32 teachers and honoured one teacher with the National Award for 2025 at a State-level Teachers’ Day function at Lok Bhavan in Shimla on Saturday.
Congratulating the award-winning teachers, Gupta said teachers, parents and students all have an important role in strengthening the education system. He emphasised the need for teachers to combine academic learning with values, saying education becomes more effective when teachers remain sensitive to their responsibility of shaping students.
The Governor paid tribute to former President and eminent educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on his birth anniversary and highlighted the wider role of teachers in shaping the future of students and the nation.
Governor stresses quality, value-based education
Gupta said teachers do more than impart textbook knowledge, as they help build values, character and confidence among students. He stressed that meaningful participation of youth would be essential to achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat-2047.
The Governor highlighted the importance of quality, inclusive and value-based education and referred to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He said the education system is increasingly focusing on knowledge, skills, creativity, innovation, research and character building rather than being limited to examinations and degrees.
He also highlighted initiatives including PM SHRI Schools, NIPUN Bharat, Samagra Shiksha, Digital Education and Atal Tinkering Labs, saying these programmes provide opportunities for students to develop scientific temper and 21st-century skills.
Teacher’s role remains vital in AI era
Gupta said the role of teachers has become even more important in an era of Artificial Intelligence, robotics and digital technology.
While technology can support teaching and learning, he said the inspiration, guidance, affection and values provided by teachers cannot be replaced by technology.
The Governor also praised Himachal Pradesh’s performance in education and congratulated teachers and the education system for the State’s second position nationally in Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) in the PARAKH National Survey.
Himachal education system highlighted
Education Minister Rohit Thakur said the State Government was committed to strengthening the education sector, with a particular focus on quality education. He said Himachal Pradesh’s literacy rate had reached 100 per cent and noted that more than 9,000 appointments had been made in the Education Department by the present government.
Thakur also said English was being introduced from Class I, while local languages were being promoted. He highlighted measures such as department rationalisation, educational tours for students and foreign exposure visits for teachers.
The Education Minister also said around 147 government schools had been affiliated with the CBSE board. He said the move was aimed at improving education quality and addressing the migration of students from government schools to private institutions.
Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani congratulated the award-winning teachers and said many had gone beyond their prescribed responsibilities to bring positive changes to children’s lives. He stressed the importance of teachers in realising the vision of Viksit Bharat and said the next goal should be to develop institutions of excellence.
The Teachers’ Day function also highlighted examples of teachers contributing to school enrolment, sports, science education, innovation and social development. Award-winning teachers shared how their work had helped students gain confidence, develop skills and achieve success at various levels.
The Governor extended his best wishes to the teaching fraternity and said dedicated teachers who build students and shape the future deserve recognition and encouragement.
