HP Governor Flags Poor Work Culture Before Exit

Outgoing Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has raised concerns about the state’s work culture while addressing the media before leaving office. Speaking in Shimla ahead of his transfer to Telangana as Governor, Shukla said that improving work ethics and administrative efficiency is essential for the state’s development and long-term progress.

During his remarks, the Governor emphasised that despite Himachal Pradesh’s natural resources and tourism potential, the state must strengthen its work culture to compete with other states in terms of development and economic growth.

    Concerns Over Work Culture

Shukla stated that during his three-year tenure in Himachal Pradesh, he observed shortcomings in the work culture within the state. According to him, these issues could slow the pace of development if not addressed effectively.

He cited the example of neighbouring Uttarakhand, which became a separate state later than Himachal Pradesh but has progressed faster in several development indicators. The Governor noted that a stronger work culture and administrative discipline have contributed to Uttarakhand’s growth.

Shukla stressed that improving professional ethics, productivity and accountability within government institutions and public systems would help Himachal move forward more rapidly.

    Call for Financial Self-Reliance

Apart from work culture, the Governor also emphasised the importance of financial self-reliance for the hill state. He suggested that Himachal Pradesh should reduce its dependency on external financial assistance and focus on strengthening its own revenue sources.

The state has been facing financial challenges in recent years due to rising expenditure and limited revenue generation. Shukla noted that adopting better financial management practices and promoting economic activities such as tourism, agriculture and industry could help improve the state’s fiscal position.

    Key Initiatives During His Tenure

During his time as Governor, Shukla highlighted several initiatives and social campaigns he supported, including the “Nasha Mukt Himachal” (Drug-Free Himachal) campaign aimed at combating drug abuse in the state.

He also raised concerns about public health challenges, including the increasing number of tuberculosis (TB) cases in some areas of the state. The Governor emphasised the need for greater awareness and stronger health measures to tackle such issues effectively.

In addition, Shukla encouraged environmental protection and sustainable tourism, both of which are crucial for Himachal Pradesh’s economy and ecological balance.

    Transition to New Role

Shiv Pratap Shukla is set to assume his new role as the Governor of Telangana in the coming days. Before his departure, the Himachal Pradesh government organised a farewell event in Shimla, where state leaders and officials acknowledged his contribution during his tenure.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu praised Shukla for performing his constitutional duties with dignity and dedication, stating that his leadership enhanced the prestige of the Governor’s office and helped strengthen public engagement with the Raj Bhavan.

Shukla also expressed gratitude to the people of Himachal Pradesh for their support and cooperation during his tenure.

    Outlook for Himachal Pradesh

The Governor’s remarks have sparked discussions about administrative efficiency and governance in the state. Experts believe that improving work culture, strengthening institutional accountability and encouraging innovation in governance will be crucial for Himachal Pradesh’s future development.

As the state continues to focus on tourism, infrastructure and economic reforms, leaders and policymakers are expected to take steps aimed at boosting productivity and promoting sustainable growth.
