Himachal to Provide Education Grants to Widows’ Daughters

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has approved amendments to its Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojana to provide financial assistance to daughters of widows pursuing higher education in professional courses both inside and outside the state.

Under the revised scheme, eligible students will receive grants that can help cover tuition fees and other academic expenses and will also be eligible for monthly rent assistance if hostel facilities are unavailable.

 Aimed at Empowering Vulnerable Students

The new provision is part of broader welfare measures aimed at uplifting vulnerable groups and improving access to higher education for women from economically weaker backgrounds. The Cabinet noted that financial barriers often limit daughters of widows from continuing studies at the college or university level.

Officials said that this amendment is designed to ensure that higher education is more affordable and accessible for students who might otherwise struggle to pay professional course fees.

 Supporting Professional Courses and Accommodation

The grant scheme not only covers support for professional degree and diploma programmes but also includes rent assistance of Rs 3,000 per month for students who do not have access to hostel facilities. This additional assistance aims to reduce the financial burden of pursuing studies away from home.

Government officials said the revised policy underscores Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to inclusive education and gender equity by enabling more girls to pursue advanced academic and career paths.
