Mayor, Deputy Mayor Elections Today in Four Himachal Municipal Corporations

All the four municipal corporations of Himachal Pradesh — Solan, Palampur, Mandi and Dharamshala — are likely to get mayors and deputy mayors today. In Palampur, the Congress and the BJP are set to become mayor and deputy mayor in three other places. Therefore, all eyes are now on the party leadership as to who is made mayor and deputy mayor where.

According to sources, there is a consensus in the BJP on the post of mayor in Mandi Municipal Corporation. Suman’s name is discussed here. Suman is considered close to former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and after winning the election, she has been continuously meeting Jai Ram Thakur and the party leadership. She has won the councillor election three times in a row.

Parveen and Harsh Orayi in the race in Dharamshala

The BJP is also in a strong position in the Dharamshala Municipal Corporation. The names of Parveen Kumar and journalist Harsh Ovroy, who are close to local MLA Sudhir Sharma, are said to be the frontrunners for the post of mayor.

Three names in the race in Palampur

In Palampur, Ritesh Thakur, Radha Sood and Ranjit Kaur are considered to be the frontrunners for the mayoral post. The three councillors are close to local MLA Ashish Butail.

Abhishek Mayor leads race in Solan

In Solan Municipal Corporation, the Bharatiya Janata Party has won 10 out of 17 seats. BJP’s Abhishek Thakur is considered to be a big contender for the mayoral post here. Similarly, Sushma Swaraj is being considered as a contender for the post of Deputy Mayor. However, the final decision will be taken only after the consent of the party leadership and elected councillors.

Troubles of 2 elected BJP councillors

Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony in the Solan Municipal Corporation, the difficulties of two BJP councillors have increased. They have been accused of illegal encroachment. The matter has reached the Divisional Commissioner after the allegations of encroachment were proved true in the preliminary inquiry report.

If the Divisional Commissioner decides against them, then the BJP will be left with 8 councillors in Solan. This can make the contest interesting here. For this reason, there is little chance of mayor and deputy mayoral elections in Solan today. According to sources, Congress councillors may boycott the election process.

Mayor posts open in all four municipal corporations

The post of mayor is open (unreserved) in all the four municipal corporations of the state. This time the mayor and deputy mayor will be elected for five years, while in the 2021 elections, the mayor and deputy mayor were elected for two and a half years.

Swearing-in a month later

Polling was held on May 17 in all the four civic bodies of the state. The results were declared on May 31. Now, after almost a month, the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected councillors has been held today. After the oath, the process of electing the mayor and deputy mayor will be started.
