Monsoon to weaken in Himachal Pradesh from today; sunny skies for five days

Shimla: Several parts of Himachal Pradesh received heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours, but monsoon activity is expected to weaken from Monday, August 24. Sunny weather has been prevailing across most parts of the state, including Shimla.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall activity is likely to decrease between August 24 and August 29, with mostly sunny conditions expected across the state during this period.

Temperatures likely to rise by 2-3 degrees

The change in weather conditions is expected to push temperatures up by two to three degrees Celsius across most parts of Himachal Pradesh.

Humid heat is likely to increase in the mountainous areas, while the effect will be more noticeable during the daytime in the plains. The state’s average maximum temperature is already 0.2 degrees Celsius above normal.

No weather alert has been issued for any district in the state for the next five days. The IMD has forecast only light drizzle at a few isolated places during this period.

Naina Devi records 66.8 mm rainfall

Despite the weakening monsoon, several areas recorded heavy rainfall overnight. Naina Devi in Bilaspur received the highest rainfall at 66.8 mm, followed by Dharamshala with 36.2 mm and Kangra with 26.8 mm.

Himachal records 8% rainfall deficit

Himachal Pradesh has recorded below-normal rainfall during the current monsoon season.

Between June 1 and August 23, the state normally receives 564.7 mm of rainfall. However, it has recorded only 522 mm so far, resulting in an overall rainfall deficit of around eight per cent.

Rainfall patterns have varied significantly across districts, with some areas receiving considerably less rain than normal while others have recorded above-normal precipitation.

Lahaul-Spiti faces highest deficit

Lahaul-Spiti has recorded a 55 per cent rainfall deficit, while Hamirpur has received 34 per cent less rainfall than normal.

In contrast, Kullu has recorded 23 per cent more rainfall than its normal average.
