Himachal: Orange Alert Issued for Heavy Hailstorms and Gusty Winds

Unseasonal rains, severe storms, and hailstorms occurring in Himachal Pradesh during April and May have inflicted heavy damage upon the horticulture and agriculture sectors. According to preliminary assessments, the state’s horticulture sector has suffered losses amounting to approximately ₹29 crore, while crops have sustained damage estimated at around ₹10 crore.

Meanwhile, an alert issued by the Meteorological Department, valid from Monday for the next five days, has heightened the anxiety of apple growers.

The most extensive damage has been recorded in the Jubbal-Kotkhai, Chaupal, Rohru, and Theog regions of Shimla district. Due to severe hailstorms, small apple fruits were knocked off the trees, while new leaves and twigs also sustained damage. Additionally, cash crops such as peas, cauliflower, and beans have been adversely affected.

Reports of widespread damage to horticultural crops have also emerged from the districts of Mandi, Kullu, and Sirmaur. Growers lament that this year, the combination of initially low snowfall followed by untimely hailstorms has dealt a double blow to production levels.

Harish Chauhan, President of the Himachal Pradesh Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, stated that the impact of the severe hailstorms may extend beyond the current harvest, potentially affecting growth prospects for the upcoming season as well. Experts have warned that if adverse weather conditions persist in the coming days, both the quantity and quality of produce will be compromised. The affected growers have appealed to the government for a special relief package and adequate financial compensation.

Growers Advised to Use Anti-Hail Nets

The Meteorological Department has also issued an advisory for farmers and horticulturalists. Given the potential for hailstorms to damage crops and fruit orchards, growers are advised to utilize anti-hail nets. Furthermore, motorists have been urged to exercise caution on the roads, anticipating slippery conditions and reduced visibility caused by rain and strong winds.

Heavy Hailstorms Feared Today in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi; Strong Winds Expected

Weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh took a turn once again on Sunday. Skies remained overcast across several districts, including Shimla. The Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for heavy hailstorms and dust storms across several districts of the state on May 12 and 13.

According to the department, strong winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 60 kilometers per hour are likely to blow across several regions, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla. A possibility of lightning and heavy rainfall has also been forecast.
