Himachal Panchayat Election: Supplementary voter list to be prepared for 246 Panchayats

In Himachal Pradesh, a special revision of the voter lists of 246 Panchayats will be conducted for the Panchayati Raj elections. Due to the formation of 39 new Panchayats and the proposed creation of 84 other Panchayats, wards, and revenue villages in several Panchayats have been transferred from one Panchayat to another, affecting the previously published voter lists. Now, in addition to the new Panchayats, the voter lists of the Panchayats from which these Panchayats were divided will also have to be re-created.

Revisions to Lists Necessary
The State Election Commission had already printed the voter lists, but the formation of new Panchayats has necessitated revisions to these lists. A supplementary list will be prepared for the affected Panchayats to accurately record the voters’ details. Following the state government’s decision to form 123 new Panchayats, the boundaries of many old Panchayats have changed. This has resulted in the inclusion of voters from some Panchayats in other Panchayats. This has made updating the voter lists mandatory. The concerned Block Development Officers and Panchayat Secretaries have been instructed to verify the voter details.

Panchayat Raj elections to be held before May 31st
Meanwhile, as per the Supreme Court’s order, Panchayat Raj elections in the state are to be held before May 31st. The court has directed the state government to complete the election process in a timely manner. Consequently, the State Election Commission has also begun completing the formalities. Work is underway to revise the voter list, issue reservation rosters, and determine polling stations. The goal is to complete all procedures before the formal announcement of the election date. Political activity regarding the Panchayat elections has also intensified in the state, and potential candidates have begun their preparations.
