This is good news for millions of domestic consumers in Himachal Pradesh. Domestic electricity rates will not increase in 2026. Following instructions from Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the State Electricity Board has prepared a proposal to keep electricity rates unchanged and has filed a petition with the Electricity Regulatory Commission.
According to the government, subsidies will now be provided only to needy and eligible consumers. The government has taken this step to prevent the increased burden of domestic electricity costs from being passed on to consumers due to the reduced scope of subsidies.
State Government’s Instructions to the Board
The state government has instructed the board not to increase domestic electricity rates. In light of this, the board has recommended maintaining the current electricity rates in its new tariff petition. The government has clarified that increasing electricity rates is not an option.
The board has submitted details of its requirements to the commission, along with an estimated revenue deficit of Rs 8,635 crore for the year 2026-27. This amount of Rs 8,635 crore has arisen due to the limitation of subsidies, rising costs, and the current tariff structure.
The government has assured that it will cover the financial requirements of the electricity board so that no additional burden falls on the consumers.
