Himachal Pradesh to See Active Monsoon Till Sept 3, Heavy Rain Warning for 7 Districts

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is likely to witness active monsoon conditions till September 3, with light to moderate rainfall expected across several districts and isolated heavy spells forecast in parts of the state, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather department has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall in Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Bilaspur, Solan and Sirmaur for September 1.

Meanwhile, adverse weather conditions have disrupted normal life in several parts of the state. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 98 roads, including no National Highway, remained blocked, while 107 Distribution Transformer Regions (DTRs) and 37 water supply schemes were also disrupted.

Heavy Rain Warning for Several Districts

IMD Himachal Pradesh senior scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma said light to moderate rainfall was recorded in several parts of the state during the past 24 hours, with isolated heavy spells reported in Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur.

Malgaon in Kangra and Joginder Nagar in Mandi recorded around 17 mm of rainfall, the highest during the period, while Shimla city received around 6 mm.

Sharma said rainfall was likely to continue from August 31 to September 4, particularly across the mid-hill areas.

On September 2, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Kangra, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur. On September 3, rainfall intensity is likely to decrease, although heavy rain could still occur in Kangra and Sirmaur.

Light rainfall may continue on September 4, while rainfall activity on September 5 and 6 is expected to remain limited to a few areas.

“Overall, the monsoon will remain active across Himachal Pradesh from August 31 to September 3,” Sharma said.

98 Roads Blocked, 107 Power Regions Hit

The SEOC status report compiled on the morning of August 31 showed that 98 roads were blocked across Himachal Pradesh due to adverse weather. No National Highway was reported blocked.

Mandi was the worst affected district with 43 blocked roads, followed by Kullu with 16, Chamba with 15, Kangra with seven, Sirmaur with five, Solan and Una with four each, and Lahaul and Spiti and Shimla with two each.

Power supply was also disrupted in 107 Distribution Transformer Regions (DTRs). Mandi accounted for 89 disruptions, followed by Lahaul and Spiti with eight, and Chamba and Solan with five each.

A total of 37 water supply schemes were also disrupted, all in Hamirpur district, including areas under Barsar, Bhota, Bhoranj and Sujanpur subdivisions.

IMD Issues Safety Advisory

The IMD has warned of rising water levels in major rivers and local streams as rainfall remains active through September 3.

Residents and tourists have been advised to avoid going near rivers, streams and other water bodies. Authorities have also warned of possible landslides, mudslides, waterlogging in low-lying areas and slippery road conditions.

Sharma said visibility could deteriorate considerably in several districts during periods of cloud cover and heavy rainfall and advised people to plan their travel accordingly and follow government advisories.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh received around 10 per cent less rainfall than normal between June 1 and August 31. Lahaul and Spiti recorded around 60 per cent below-normal rainfall, while another district recorded a deficiency of around 35 per cent.

In contrast, Kullu and Shimla received around 14 per cent more rainfall than normal, while most other parts of the state recorded rainfall close to the normal range.

Temperatures in several parts of Himachal Pradesh were 1–2 degrees Celsius above normal during the past 24 hours. Some stations, including Bunthar and Kalpa, recorded temperatures around 4 degrees Celsius above normal.

Shimla’s temperature is likely to remain between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius, while lower and mid-hill areas such as Kangra and Mandi could record temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius.
