Overcast Skies in Himachal, Light Snowfall Likely in High Altitudes on December 20–21

Shimla: Most parts of Himachal Pradesh have been overcast since this morning. The lack of sunshine has brought a slight chill to the mountains. Meteorologist Sandeep Sharma said that the sun didn’t shine today due to high clouds. The weather will clear up in the afternoon.

He said that a Western Disturbance is becoming active on December 20th and 21st. This is expected to cause light snowfall in higher altitude areas. Light snowfall is possible on the higher peaks of Chamba, Kangra, Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, and Kinnaur districts. The weather will remain completely clear in other districts.

Meanwhile, Shimla’s minimum temperature dropped by 1.6 degrees Celsius last night. Shimla’s mercury was then recorded at 9.8 degrees. In contrast, Kufri, which is colder than Shimla, saw its night temperature rise to 10.1 degrees. Meanwhile, Sundernagar in Mandi recorded 5.5 degrees, Bhuntar 5.2, Kalpa 4.0, Kukumsari -4.7, Barthi 4.9, and Tabo -4.3.

Drought-like conditions in the state

Drought-like conditions are developing in the state. Farmers are unable to sow wheat due to the lack of rain or snowfall. Apple growers and tourism businesses are also disappointed by the lack of snowfall. The state received significantly more rainfall than normal in the second week of October. However, there has been no rain or snowfall since October 12th. This has led to a dry spell of more than two months.

100 percent less rainfall in December

Last November, rainfall was 96 percent below normal, and in December, it was 100 percent below normal, meaning not a single drop of rain fell. There is no prospect of significant rain or snowfall for the next week.
