Himachal: Resident doctors, interns, and MBBS students on strike at IGMC

The altercation between a doctor and a patient at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) has escalated. On Friday, services at health institutions across the state were disrupted as doctors went on casual leave. Patients were left stranded, desperately seeking treatment.

Doctors had scheduled surgeries for Friday, but these were postponed due to their leave. Patients have not yet been given new dates for their operations. Now, the doctors have gone on an indefinite strike. As a result, services at health institutions in Himachal Pradesh are likely to remain affected on Saturday. Adding to the patients’ woes, 108 and 102 ambulance services have also gone on strike.

Resident doctors are furious after Dr. Raghav’s services were terminated following allegations of assaulting a patient. Besides IGMC, services were also affected at medical colleges in Tanda, Nahan, Nerchowk, Chamba, and Hamirpur, causing hardship for patients. Long queues of patients formed outside the OPDs from early morning, but due to the absence of doctors, many had to return home without treatment.

Although specialist doctors were also deployed in the OPDs, they were overwhelmed by the large number of patients. Dr. Raghav hails from Sirmaur district, and in solidarity with him, traders in Paonta kept their shops closed.
