Himachal: Snowfall on Himachal’s peaks; rain expected today with hailstorm

The weather in Himachal Pradesh has taken a turn once again. Light snowfall occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the peaks, including the Rohtang Pass, Shinkula, and Baralacha. Due to the western disturbance intensifying in the state, the weather is forecast to remain inclement from Wednesday. The Meteorological Department has forecast rain across most of the state and snowfall in the higher elevations through March 16th. A yellow alert has also been issued for hailstorms in some areas.

Clouds began to cover several districts, including the capital Shimla, from Tuesday afternoon. This change in weather, along with cold winds, has also led to a drop in temperatures. According to the Meteorological Department, rain is expected in the plains and mid-mountain areas and snowfall in the higher elevations from Wednesday. The activation of the western disturbance will keep the state’s weather unstable from March 11th to 16th.

Intermittent rain is expected across many districts, with snowfall in the higher elevations during this period. Snowfall is likely, especially in the high altitude areas of Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, Kinnaur, and Chamba. A yellow alert has been issued in some districts, anticipating the possibility of thunderstorms and hailstorms. The department has advised farmers and gardeners to take necessary precautions based on the weather.

There is also a possibility of damage to crops and fruit trees due to strong winds and hailstorms. Temperatures have been steadily rising in the plains of the state for the past few days, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in some places.

Avalanche threat in high altitude areas, advisory issued
In view of the increasing threat of avalanches in the high-altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh, the police have issued an advisory for tourists. The administration has urged tourists to avoid high-altitude and sensitive areas for the time being.

According to police, avalanches have been reported in several high-altitude areas of the state in recent days, increasing the risk. In response, tourists and locals are being alerted through public announcement systems in Lahaul-Spiti district. Police and administrative teams at various locations are advising people to stay in safe places and avoid risky areas.
