Himachal: Three convicts, including a couple, sentenced 20 years of imprisonment in rape case

A court has sentenced a couple and another individual to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case of the rape of a minor. The convicts have also been fined, and failure to pay the fine will result in additional imprisonment. The court has ordered the state government to pay the victim compensation of one lakh rupees, which is to be paid within 30 days.

The judgment was pronounced by Additional Sessions Judge Nitin Mittal of the Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) in Dharamshala.

What’s the matter

The convicted woman had burned and hidden the victim’s clothes after the rape, attempting to destroy evidence. The victim’s brother-in-law filed a complaint at a police station in Kangra district in October 2023. The complaint stated that the victim had come to her brother-in-law’s house on September 4, 2023, to help her pregnant elder sister and was staying there.

Subsequently, on January 1, 2024, the victim’s father and a relative (her maternal uncle) took her away. For the next two days, they were unable to contact the victim. When they finally spoke to her on the phone, the victim revealed that she had been sexually assaulted. The prosecution was represented by Special District Attorney Naveena Rahi, assisted by Naib Court Yashpal.
