Himachal Weather: 120% Excess Rain; Hailstorm Alert, Winds at 60 km/h

In Himachal Pradesh, rainfall over the past week has been 120% higher than normal. There is no relief from rain expected in the state for the next three days as well. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy hailstorm and strong winds in five districts for today and tomorrow.

An orange alert will remain today in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla, while a warning has been issued for Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts tomorrow. Additionally, a yellow alert will be in effect for all other districts.

According to the IMD, strong winds blowing at a speed of 50 to 60 km per hour may occur along with the hailstorm. This forecast by the Meteorological Department has increased concerns among apple growers and farmers.

Over the past three days, hailstorms have caused severe damage to apple crops in several areas of Shimla and Kullu districts. This has damaged the apple blossoms, and anti-hell nets and bamboo structures have also broken.

Western disturbance more active 

According to the meteorological department, the weather in the state will remain worse from April 7 to April 9. Especially on April 8, there is a possibility of heavy rain, hailstorm, and strong winds. From April 10, the western disturbance will begin to weaken, although there are still chances of light rain in higher hilly areas on that day. On April 11 and 12, light rain may also occur in medium and higher altitude areas.

Drop in temperature

Meanwhile, due to the rain, hailstorm, and snowfall in the high mountains over the past 24 hours, a drop in temperature has been recorded. The state’s average maximum temperature has fallen 2.3 degrees Celsius below normal.

In Kangra, the maximum temperature was recorded at 27.8 degrees Celsius, 4.3 degrees below normal. In Manali, it fell to 15.4 degrees after a drop of 4.0 degrees, and in Mandi, it was recorded at 26.8 degrees Celsius, a decrease of 3.0 degrees. A further drop in temperature is expected in the next three days.
