Himachal Weather: 185 roads blocked due to landslides; Kinnaur Kailash Yatra suspended for the second consecutive day

Landslides continue to occur at various locations in Himachal Pradesh due to rainfall. As of 10 AM on Saturday, 185 roads across the state remained blocked due to landslides. Additionally, 104 electricity transformers and 77 water supply schemes have been disrupted. The highest number of road closures is reported in the Mandi and Kullu districts. The Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall in the state for the next week, with an ‘Orange Alert’ issued for heavy rain in five districts over the next two days. Weather conditions in Shimla also remain inclement.

Kinnaur Kailash Yatra suspended for the second consecutive day; now to continue until August 15
The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra has been suspended for the past two days due to adverse weather conditions. On Saturday, the administration did not allow pilgrims to proceed beyond the Tangling and Ganesh Bagh base camps; pilgrims had similarly been held back at these camps on Friday.

Meanwhile, the administration has taken a significant decision regarding the Yatra. Considering the convenience and safety of the pilgrims, the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra will now continue until August 15, when it will conclude. According to the administration’s notification, a decision on whether to allow the journey to proceed from the second base camp—Maling Khatta (Ganesh Bagh)—towards Kailash will be made daily at 11:00 PM.

A team deployed at Ganesh Gufa and Maling Khatta will inspect the water levels in the ravine near the cave and assess the condition of the pilgrimage route. Pilgrims will be permitted to proceed beyond 11:00 PM only if conditions are deemed safe.

The administration has urged pilgrims to wait for the final decision and not to move forward without authorization. Praveen Bhardwaj, Chairman of the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra Organizing Committee and SDM Kalpa, stated that the decision to extend the closing date was made because the Yatra had been disrupted for two days, thereby ensuring that pilgrims who missed the opportunity could undertake the journey in the coming days. He appealed to all pilgrims to prioritize safety above all else and to adhere to the issued guidelines.

143 Lives Lost So Far This Monsoon
In the state, 143 people have lost their lives during the current monsoon season, spanning from June 30 to August 7, while 226 others have been injured. Of these fatalities, 78 resulted from road accidents. A total of 22 concrete houses and 41 mud houses were completely destroyed, while 242 houses (of both types) sustained partial damage. Additionally, 12 shops and 203 cattle sheds were damaged, and 197 livestock animals perished. The total estimated loss has reached ₹83,467.45 lakh.
