Dense Fog Covers Himachal Plains; Temperatures Dip Below Freezing in Many Areas

Shimla: Dense fog remained in the plains of Himachal Pradesh on Friday morning. Visibility in Bilaspur and Mandi has reduced to less than 50 meters. Fog also remained in the lower reaches of Solan, Kangra, Hamirpur and Una till 10 am.

Cold intensified in the plains, night temperatures increased in Shimla and Kufri

While the fog is increasing the cold in the plains, the night temperatures have increased in the upper towns of Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda. The minimum temperature in Shimla increased by 3.5 degrees above normal to 9.2 degrees Celsius, while the temperature in the plains remained close to freezing.

The temperature in many cities dropped below 5 degrees.

Kullu’s Bajora recorded 1.4°C, Sundernagar 2.7°C, Bhuntar 2.0°C, Solan 2.6°C, Manali 2.7°C, Palampur 4.5°C, Mandi 3.8°C and Hamirpur 4.3°C.

Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti recorded -4.0°C and Kukumsari -5.9°C.

Thirteen cities in the state recorded temperatures below 5 degrees, eight cities below 3 degrees and 26 places below 10 degrees.

Light rain and snowfall are likely in the upper areas on December 13-14

According to the Meteorological Department, the plains will get relief from the fog only if there is widespread rain and snowfall in the hills. However, heavy rain or snowfall is not expected next week.

However, a western disturbance will become active on December 13 and 14, which may cause light rain and snowfall in upper parts of Chamba, Kinnaur, Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti. The weather will remain dry elsewhere.

Night temperatures below normal next week

According to the Meteorological Department, day temperatures will increase slightly, while night temperatures will remain below normal next week.

Maximum temperature in upper areas: 10-16°C

Mid-altitude areas: 16-22°C

Mid-hills: 22-26°C

Minimum temperature forecast:

Mid-hills: 2-10°C

Mid-hills: 0-8°C

High-hills: -8 to 2°C
