Shimla: About 85 km of four-lane roads will be built underground in Himachal. For this, NHAI has obtained approval from the Central Government and the Ministry of Environment. NHAI is going to build 68 tunnels, and a DPR of more than 50 percent of these has also been prepared. NHAI has completed the construction of 11 tunnels so far, while work on 27 is going on across the state, and a DPR of 30 tunnels is being prepared. NHAI has prepared proposals for most of the tunnels only after the disaster last year. In fact, during the disaster, the Kiratpur-Manali National Highway suffered the most damage in Kullu and Mandi.
Apart from this, the Pathankot-Mandi and Pinjore-Nalagarh routes were also affected by the disaster.
After the disaster, NHAI had the affected national highway inspected by retired engineers from IIT and NHAI, and during that time, the suggestions for building tunnels were the highest. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had also instructed NHAI to consider tunnel construction in these disaster-affected areas. Now, in response to all these, NHAI has made preparations to pass most of the four lanes through tunnels. With the construction of these tunnels, the total distance of all four lanes in the state will be reduced by 126 kilometers, while the journey of the passengers will be reduced by 13 hours. Also, the national highways will not be affected by rain or snowfall.
Pathankot-Mandi, Kalka-Shimla, Shimla-Mataur, Kiratpur-Manali, and Pinjore-Nalagarh National Highways are being constructed in Himachal.
68 tunnels are being built in them. 28 tunnels of 41.31 kilometers in length are proposed in Kiratpur-Manali. Out of these, 13 have been constructed. A tunnel has been constructed between Kanthalighat and Parwanoo in the Kalka-Shimla four-lane highway, while the construction of about a one-kilometer-long tunnel is still going on in Kandaghat. In this four-lane road, the construction of half a dozen tunnels is proposed between Kanthalighat and Dhali.
A double-lane tunnel has been constructed at Kotla on the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway. The total length of the tunnels is 85.110 km.
The construction of these tunnels will save 12.50 hours, and the distance will be reduced by 126 km in the entire state.
