After uproar men’s volleyball team trials cancelled, selection will be done afresh

The team has to leave for Jaipur on the 5th, so selecting players is no less than a challenge for the department.

Shimla: After questions were raised on the selection process, the Youth Services and Sports Department canceled the trials for the men’s team six days before the Senior National Volleyball Championship.

The Sports Department issued orders to cancel the trials on Wednesday and claimed that a new team will be selected soon. The competition is starting in Jaipur from January 7. The team has to leave for Jaipur on the 5th, so selecting players is no less than a challenge for the department.

The trials for the men’s and women’s teams for the national competition were held on December 26 at Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Shimla. When the list of players selected for the men’s team was revealed, some players who participated in the trials questioned the selection process. Accusing the selectors of rigging, they accused them of excluding players who had played in the national earlier. They said that there was no transparency in the selection process and players associated with influential people were selected.

In such a situation, the good players could not be included in the team. Udit, a player who participated in the trials, had released a video on social media and accused a coach of ignoring deserving players to give his son a place in the team.

When some players met the Chief Minister in the matter, he ordered the Director of Sports Department to investigate. After the investigation, the trials were now cancelled. Players were called from Himachal and other states to select the team. Arjun Award winner Sanjay Phogat was the supervisor of the selection committee. International volleyball coach Mohammad Tariq and player Ranveer Singh from Jammu and Kashmir were also included in the selection committee. After the controversy, member Phogat rejected all the allegations.
