Shimla: Himachal Pradesh has recorded a 24 percent deficit in rainfall between June 1 and September 1. The figure of rain deficit has come amid heavy rainfall in the state that caused extensive damage and claimed over 150 lives. Out of the 12 districts in the state, 11 recorded a rainfall deficit. According to the Meteorological Department, only Shimla district received 10 percent more rainfall than the average.
The state received 471.1 mm of rainfall in the current monsoon season, while the average is 618.9 mm, which is 24 percent less.
According to the data of the Meteorological Department, Lahaul, and Spiti districts recorded the highest rainfall deficit of 73 percent, followed by Kinnaur at 43 percent, Chamba and Una at 34-34 percent, Hamirpur at 33 percent, Solan at 31 percent, Kullu at 22 percent, Sirmaur at 16 percent, Mandi and Bilaspur at 11-11 percent, Kangra at eight percent. Officials said that from the onset of the monsoon on June 27 till Saturday evening, 151 people have died in rain-related incidents so far. He said that the state has suffered a loss of Rs 1,265 crore due to rain damage.
The weather in the state remained mainly dry since Saturday evening except for rain in isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh. Nahan received the highest rainfall with 20 mm of rain, followed by Mandi 15 mm, Dharamsala 5 mm and Dalhousie 4 mm, while Neri and Kufri recorded traces of rain.
The local meteorological department has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rain, thunderstorm,s and lightning at different places in the state on September 3. On Saturday, Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti was the coldest place in the state with a minimum temperature of 11.9 degrees Celsius, while Una was the hottest with a maximum temperature of 36 degrees Celsius.
