Bilaspur: Despite the ban on fishing in all the big and small water bodies of Himachal Pradesh, the department has taken strict cognizance of the cases of illegal fishing. So far, taking action on 127 cases of illegal fishing reported across the state, the department has collected a fine of Rs 86600. The maximum number of cases have been reported in Pong Dam, Kangra. Talking about the Bilaspur district, 35 cases of illegal fishing were reported in Gobind Sagar Lake and Koldam, on which the department has collected a fine of Rs 18100 from the illegal hunters. Similarly, taking action in 23 cases of illegal fishing in Chamera and Ranjit Singh Sagar Dam in Chamba district, a fine of Rs 18200 has been collected, while a fine of Rs 50300 has been collected in 68 cases in Pong Dam. The department has alerted other teams, including the flying squad, and has asked them to take action as per rules if caught doing illegal fishing.
A complete ban has been imposed on fishing in the water bodies of the state from 16 June to 15 August. During this period, the breeding season of fish remains. More than 5000 fishermen are regularly fishing in the 5 water bodies of the state, namely Gobind Sagar, Pong Dam, Chamera, Kol Dam, and Ranjit Sagar, and the total area of these water bodies is 43785 hectares. Apart from this, more than 6,000 fishermen catch fish in various main rivers and their tributaries in the state.
If anyone is found fishing during the ban period, then according to the rules, there is a provision of imprisonment for up to six months and a fine of Rs 300 to 1000 or both.
