Shimla: Fishing has been completely banned in the reservoirs of Himachal Pradesh. This ban will be in force from June 16 to August 15 in normal waters. Meanwhile, there will be a complete ban on fishing in reservoirs. This disclosure has been made by the Director and Chief Fisheries, Himachal Pradesh, Vivek Chandel.
It is the responsibility of the Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department that all the above fishermen’s families continue to get fish for their livelihood. With this objective in view, every year the Fisheries Department imposes a complete ban on fishing in normal waters and reservoirs for two months so that various species of naturally breeding fish can breed successfully and the appropriate number of fish is maintained in different water areas naturally.
This closed season is implemented under the Fisheries Act 1976 and the Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Rules 2020. The department has formed various inspection teams to prevent illegal hunting in various divisions of the main reservoirs of the state, and flying squads will continuously patrol by road.
If anyone is found fishing, there is a provision of imprisonment for up to six months and a fine ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 1000 or both. If any citizen violates the rules, strict action will be taken as per the Fisheries Act of 1976 and the Fisheries Rules of 2020.
More than 5000 fishermen are fishing in the five reservoirs of the state: Govindsagar, Paung Dam, Chamera Dam, Kol Dam, and Ranjit Sagar Dam. The total area of these reservoirs is 43785 hectares. Apart from this, 6,000 fishermen catch fish in various main rivers and their tributaries in the state.
