Shimla: In the much talked about Gudiya rape-murder case of Himachal Pradesh, the CBI court of Chandigarh will sentence 8 police officers for killing the accused in police custody. On January 18, the court had convicted 8 officers including the state’s IG Zahoor H. Zaidi.
The remaining officers include DSP Manoj Joshi, SI Rajinder Singh, ASI Deep Chand Sharma, honorary head constables Mohan Lal and Surat Singh, head constable Rafi Mohammad and constable Ranit Sateta. The court had acquitted the then Shimla SP DW Negi due to lack of evidence.
Let us tell you that in 2017, Gudiya was raped and murdered in Kotkhai of Shimla district. The police took the accused Suraj into custody. He died after being tortured there. The police put the blame on the other accused Raju.
However, after Suraj’s murder in the lockup, the angry mob tried to burn down the Kotkhai police station. Then the then Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh handed over the case to the CBI. The CBI arrested 9 police officers and jawans including the IG and SP Shimla in this case.
16-year-old raped and murdered, police took 2 youths into custody
On 4th July, 2017, a 16-year-old girl (Gudiya, a fictitious name) went missing while returning from school in Kotkhai of Shimla district. On 6th July, the naked body of the girl was found in the Tandi forest of Kotkhai. Police investigation found that the girl was raped and then murdered.
To investigate this case, an SIT was formed under the chairmanship of the then IG of Shimla, Syed Zahoor Haider Zaidi. The SIT arrested Raju and Suraj in this case. Suraj died in police custody. The police blamed Raju for this.
people protested here over the death in police custody. After which the government handed over the investigation to CBI. The CBI investigation revealed that Sooraj died due to police torture during interrogation.
On this basis, CBI registered a case against IG Zaidi and 9 other police officers and employees related to the case under section 302 of murder, sections for destruction of evidence and many other serious sections. More than 20 injury marks were found on Sooraj’s body. The report of the board of doctors of AIIMS confirmed that Sooraj was tortured.
