Shimla: It has been snowing in the higher regions of Himachal Pradesh for the last 3 days and rain in the lower regions. Lahaul Spiti district along with Pangi of Chamba and most areas of Kinnaur district have been cut off from the district headquarters due to closure of roads after heavy snowfall.
Heavy rain has been falling in most parts of the state since last night. In view of this, all government and private schools in Chamba, Kinnaur, Lahaul Spiti districts have been closed today. Schools in Manali, Banjar and Kullu sub-divisions of Kullu district have also been closed.
This order will be applicable for all schools affiliated to HP, ICSE and CBSE boards. The board exams for the classes which are going on will be conducted as per the pre-decided programme.
Where is the snowfall
More than 6 feet of fresh snowfall has occurred at Rohtang Pass. 4.5 feet of snow has fallen at Atal Tunnel Rohtang, 3 feet at Solang Nala, 1 feet at Pooh in Kinnaur, 5 inches at Murang, 1.5 feet at Kalpa, 1.5 feet at Sangla and 2 feet at Chitkul.
Lahaul Spiti district has been isolated due to the closure of Atal Tunnel. More than 80 percent of the houses in Lahaul Spiti and Kinnaur have been blacked out. Electricity supply has been affected due to heavy snowfall. Water pipes have also frozen. Due to this, people are not getting drinking water.
Fresh snowfall in 7 districts
In the last 24 hours, there has been fresh snowfall in seven districts. There has been fresh snowfall in the higher regions of Lahaul Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla districts. This has brought smiles on the faces of tourism businessmen as well as farmers and gardeners. The road connecting Upper Shimla to the capital at Narkanda, Kharapathar and Chaupal Khidki has been closed for traffic.
Buses stuck in Narkanda-Khidki were removed
Some vehicles and government buses got stuck in Narkanda and Khidki last night, which were rescued late at night. In view of this, the HRTC management instructed all RMs last evening that no bus should be sent via Narkanda.
More than three feet of snowfall in Rohtang Pass
More than three feet of snowfall has occurred in many areas of Lahaul Spiti. One and a half to two feet of snowfall has also occurred in the higher regions of Pangi, Bharmour, Kinnaur of Chamba. More than four feet of fresh snowfall has occurred at Rohtang Pass, two and a half feet of snowfall has occurred at Koksar and North Portal of Atal Tunnel, two feet of snowfall has occurred at South Portal of Atal Tunnel, and one and a half feet of snowfall has occurred in Pangi.
Holidays in schools of Lahaul Spiti
Holidays have been declared in schools of Lahaul Spiti district and Pangi after heavy snowfall disrupted traffic. More than 250 roads and more than 350 electricity transformers have stopped working in the state.
Orange alert for heavy rain and snowfall even today
The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall at one or two places in Kinnaur and Lahaul Spiti districts. Whereas, a warning of rain has been issued at one or two places in Mandi, Shimla, Kangra, Kullu, Sirmaur districts.
The Western Disturbance will weaken tomorrow and the day after. But there are chances of good rain and snowfall again on March 3.
