Heavy rain-snowfall warning in Himachal today: Alert of glacier falling in Lahaul-Spiti

The weather has turned bad since this morning in the higher regions of Himachal Pradesh. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rain and snowfall today.

Chamba, Kangra and Lahaul Spiti districts have been issued an orange alert. One or two spells of heavy snowfall may occur in these districts.

Similarly, a yellow alert has been issued for rain and snowfall in all the other 7 districts except Kinnaur. According to IMD, districts with orange alert may receive snowfall up to 70 cm today and districts with yellow alert may receive rainfall up to 70 mm.

There is a forecast of rain and snowfall in 6 districts Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur tomorrow. The weather will remain clear in other districts. The Western Disturbance will weaken from the day after tomorrow i.e. from March 5 and the weather will become clear across the state for the next three-four days.

Glacier fall warning

Meanwhile, the Lahaul Spiti administration has issued a warning of avalanches in the district, as the district has witnessed heavy snowfall from 25 February to 1 March. At many places, there has been snowfall of more than 6 feet. In such a situation, people have been asked to be cautious. Snowy mountains in high regions can cause loss of life and property at any time.

During the last two days, 8 incidents of avalanches have been reported in Lahaul Spiti, Chamba and Kinnaur districts. Yesterday, glaciers fell at four places including Gue ITBP outpost. Last Friday night also, an avalanche fell on the South Portal of Atal Tunnel.

223 roads, 800 transformers closed

On the other hand, after the snowfall in the past few days, 223 roads and 800 electricity transformers are still closed in the state. Most of these are closed in Kullu and Lahaul Spiti district. The work of restoring them is going on. But fresh rain and snowfall today can create obstacles in this work.
