Shimla: Police in Himachal on Saturday filed a FIR against 57 people after a group of protesters hurled shoes and threw black flags at Himachal Pradesh Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi’s car during his three-day visit to the Seraj Assembly constituency.
Reports reaching The Savera times said that police have registered three FIRs at the Janjheli police station, charging 57 individuals with various offenses including obstructing officials and threatening the minister.
Among those named in the FIR is Murari Lal, booked under IPC sections 125, 351, and 352 for threatening the minister, disturbing peace, and insulting him. Others have been charged with blocking the road, disrupting the minister’s visit aimed at accelerating relief and rescue work for disaster-affected families.
The unrest erupted following the minister’s decision to shift the Horticulture College from Thunag—a move strongly opposed by locals. Jagat Singh Negi defended the government’s decision, stating it was taken to ensure the safety of students and families after repeated natural calamities forced children to flee the area. He added that some local traders opposed the move fearing economic losses.
BJP State President Rajeev Bindal condemned the government’s actions, accusing the Congress administration of suppressing public voices by filing cases against protesters. Bindal said the government’s handling of the situation added to the distress of disaster-affected people and called the state administration “useless” for failing to address citizens’ problems.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu condemned the protests, labeling them as undemocratic and obstructive to relief efforts. He warned that strict legal action will be taken against those impeding rehabilitation work, emphasizing the government’s commitment to aid every affected family.
