Himachal: Brainstorming on implementing UPS in place of OPS, matter to be discussed in Cabinet meeting

Now the Center has sent a letter asking to implement UPS, but the state government has not yet responded in this regard.

In Himachal, the state government is considering the possibility of implementing UPS in place of OPS. The bureaucracy has started brainstorming on the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). The matter of implementing UPS in place of OPS for employees is to be brought in the cabinet meeting. In this, the profit and loss of the employees as well as the benefit to the state government is also to be seen.

After coming to power, Congress implemented the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for the employees. However, it is yet to be implemented in many corporations and boards. Implementing OPS was the first guarantee of Congress in the manifesto. When the Congress government implemented OPS after coming to power, there was no UPS. Now the Center has sent a letter asking to implement UPS, but the state government has not yet responded in this regard.

Meanwhile, Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh said that whether to implement UPS or not, this matter is to be discussed in the cabinet meeting. In this, the profit and loss of the employees will be taken care of. It also needs to be seen that the financial burden on the state is reduced. Vikramaditya said that when OPS was implemented in the state, there was no UPS at that time. Now that the Centre has implemented UPS, this will also be discussed.

He said that Rs 9,600 crore of NPS is stuck with the Central Government. Correspondence has been going on with the Centre regarding this. The Centre should also not link everything to politics. In Himachal, the government has implemented OPS in place of NPS. Employees recruited after the year 2003 who have retired have started getting old pension.

UPS is a scheme of the Central Government. In this, there is a provision of pension to government employees on the basis of their service period and last salary. If the state government implements UPS, then Himachal will get a special annual assistance of Rs 1600 crore from the Central Government.
