The meeting of the Himachal Cabinet will continue today as well. Many important decisions can be made in it. There will be a discussion in the cabinet about increasing the retirement age of government employees from 58 years to 59 years. The cabinet subcommittee formed to increase the income resources and improve the economic condition has recommended this. The final decision on this has to be taken by the cabinet.
If the government increases the retirement age of employees by one year, then the pension liability of about Rs 3000 crore will be deferred by one year. This can be a big relief for the government facing an economic crisis. But, it will be a setback for more than 10 lakh unemployed youth of the state. Therefore, the cabinet will take a decision in this matter, keeping in mind the government treasury and the jobs of the youth.
The former Virbhadra government has also done this once in the midst of an economic crisis. This will not end the liabilities of the employees, but it can be postponed for one year. On the contrary, after one year, there will be more burden on the government treasury.
If the cabinet does not make the retirement age 59 years, then a decision can also be taken to retire all the employees in the education department on March 31. With this decision, the government will be able to postpone the liability of more than Rs 700 crore for one year.
Similarly, there can be a discussion in the cabinet about stopping 40 percent commutation. The cabinet subcommittee has suggested stopping the 40 percent commutation given at the time of retirement to avoid financial crisis. If this is done, then the 40 percent amount that the employees get as a pension on retirement will not be taken in advance. A decision on this too is to be taken after discussion in the cabinet.
