Himachal Govt fixes criteria for formation of Panchayats

The Panchayati Raj Department will take forward the process of formation of Panchayats after sorting out the applications

Shimla: In Himachal Pradesh, a new Panchayat will be formed only if the population is more than 1000. The government has fixed the criteria for the formation of Panchayats. Apart from the Panchayati Raj Department, applications can also be sent to the District Deputy Commissioners for the formation of new Panchayats.

The Panchayati Raj Department will take forward the process of formation of Panchayats after sorting out the applications. After the formation of new Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils in the state, the boundaries of Panchayats are also changing. In such a situation, the process of formation of new Panchayats has been started on the demand of the people.

Many Panchayats in the state are very large geographically, due to which people have to travel a long distance to get their work done. New Panchayats will be formed on the basis of the population of the Panchayat and the number of voters. Apart from the population, a new Panchayat will be formed if the distance of the farthest village from the current headquarters of the Gram Panchayat is 5 km or more. New Panchayats will be formed from those Gram Panchayats of tribal areas whose population is 750 and above.

The applications received for the formation of panchayats will be examined on the basis of the criteria set by the government. After this, objections and suggestions will be sought by issuing notifications. After the completion of this process, the District Deputy Commissioner will give his decision and approve the Panchayati Raj Department. During the BJP government, 412 new panchayats were formed in the state. At present, there are a total of 3612 panchayats in Himachal.

The process of formation of new panchayats has been started in the state. New panchayats will be formed only on the population of more than 1000. Applications have also started coming. The government will evaluate the applications. The decision to form a new panchayat will be taken only on the applications fulfilling the criteria. – Anirudh Singh, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister
