Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Sikandar Kumar met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday. During this, Dr. Sikandar discussed about the construction of a tunnel in Chahni Jot of Pangi, a very remote valley of Chamba district, and handed over a demand letter to him. Sikandar Kumar told the Union Minister that the daily life of the people of Pangi is full of difficulties. There are almost no basic facilities for the people in this valley. Neither the condition of the roads is good there nor is there any proper health facility, due to which they have to come to Chamba headquarters to get their work done and for better health facilities.
The situation here becomes even more difficult in winters because to reach Pangi valley, one has to come through Sach Pass which is about 15,000 feet high, which remains closed for six months of the year due to heavy snowfall. In such a situation, if the people of Pangi want to come to Chamba, they have to travel 500-700 km via Jammu or Lahaul-Spiti, Atal Tunnel Rohtang, Manali, Kullu, which proves to be very expensive for the people of Pangi and also takes more time. In such a situation, the construction of the tunnel in Chahni Jot will improve the lives of the people here and they will remain connected to Chamba headquarters 12 months a year. Through a demand letter, he requested the Union Minister to fulfill the long-standing demand of the people of Pangi.
Union Minister Gadkari, while considering this demand letter seriously, assured all possible help and cooperation from the Central Government for this work. Gadkari said that he himself has also been to Pangi and is aware of the difficult geographical conditions there. He said that the concerned department will soon be instructed to prepare a DPR for the construction of this tunnel. He said that the construction of this tunnel will also improve the lives of the people of Pangi. Also, this tunnel will be important from the point of view of the country’s security system. It is worth mentioning that on 10 March 2025, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Sikandar Kumar had raised the issue of tunnel construction in Chahni Jot in the House and he is continuously raising various topics and issues related to the development and progress of Himachal Pradesh in the House.
