Paonta Sahib: Massive landslide blocks NH 707, causes vehicle backups and power outages

Shimla: A massive landslide on NH 707 has blocked the road, causing vehicle backups and power outages. The SDM confirmed that machinery will be dispatched and strict action against negligent companies will follow.

Due to the rain in the last 24 hours in the state, 184 roads have been closed for traffic. The maximum number of 127 roads have been blocked in Shimla zone. 32 roads have been blocked in Mandi zone, 8 in Hamirpur zone and 17 in Kangra zone. The closure of roads has affected the transportation of apples.

More than 100 roads — including Chandigarh-Manali, Shimla-Kinnaur, and Paonta Sahib-Shillai — are blocked since Monday’s moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Himachal Pradesh.

The State Emergency Operation Centre reported 109 blocked routes, with highest 55 in Sirmaur district, followed by 23 in Shimla, 10 each in Kangra and Mandi, and 9 in Kullu.

The impact of rainfall disrupted 427 distribution transformer regions across the state, resulting in a long outage. The SEOC counted 419 dysfunctional DTRs in Sirmaur district. The weather office recorded 99.7 millimetres of rainfall in Sirmaur, which is 1,366% higher than the normal of 6.8 mm. There is a yellow alert for Tuesday in nine districts, except Chamba, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti, which means that there could be another heavy spell of rain.
