In Himachal Pradesh, all old electricity meters will be converted into prepaid by the end of this year. These smart electricity meters will be recharged like mobile phones. A target has been set to install smart prepaid meters in homes, shops, offices and industrial establishments by December 2025. This change will allow consumers to pay according to the consumption of electricity. The power supply will automatically stop as soon as the recharge amount of the meter is exhausted.
The electricity board management has started the process of inviting tenders for the purchase of new meters in the state. As per the instructions of the central government, the electricity board has expedited the process regarding prepaid meters. The state electricity board management had constituted a committee a few months ago to make arrangements for installing prepaid meters. The recommendations of the committee have now been approved by the government. In such a situation, the management has started the tender process. On installation of prepaid meters, the security amount of the meter will not be taken from the consumer.
On installation of prepaid meters, more than 19.5 lakh consumers of the state will be able to get recharged like a mobile phone according to the need of the family. In smart meters, the information about electricity consumption and bill will go directly to the consumer’s mobile. For recharge, the electricity board will install vending machines at various places in the state. Consumers will get an SMS about power outage before the recharge money runs out. Electricity theft will be curbed by prepaid meter connection. The central government has announced to convert all electricity meters to prepaid. In this connection, the electricity board has now started the process in Himachal.
With prepaid meters, people will be able to consume electricity according to their need. This will lead to more savings. Prepaid meters will benefit those families who are not in a position to pay more electricity bills at once. They will be able to recharge the meter according to their need. If someone has gone out on holidays, then they will not have to pay the electricity bill.

At present, postpaid electricity meters are installed in the homes of consumers. There are complaints of getting electricity bills more than the reading. In many areas, bills of two or three months are received together. After installing prepaid meters, there will be relief from this. The electricity board will also save manpower.
