Mandi: A professor posted at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi in Himachal Pradesh has been fired from his job on charges of sexual harassment. About one and a half years ago, two IIT girl students had accused the professor of sexual harassment.
An internal complaint committee was formed to investigate the matter. After its report, the Board of Governance (BOG) of IIT Mandi has taken action against the accused professor. However, the accused has appealed to the President to take cognizance of this action. This has been confirmed by IIT Mandi Registrar Dr. Kumar Sambhav Pandey.
Actually, in July last year, two B. Tech girl students of IIT Mandi had accused Professor Dr. Rajneesh Giri. After this, the IIT Mandi administration started investigating the allegations made by the girl students at its own level.
The administration formed an internal complaint committee. After months of investigation, this committee recommended the expulsion of the accused professor from the institute.
The professor was found guilty in the committee’s report. For this, the committee had personally talked to other girl students of the institute. Also, the teaching style of the professor was quietly investigated. After this, the professor’s attitude came to light. Then the committee submitted its report to the BOG.
The investigation remained suppressed for one and a half years, the police was not even informed. The IIT management kept this matter completely confidential for one and a half years and investigated it at its level. About 1 month after action was taken against the professor, this information has come out. Not only this, this case related to sexual harassment was not even sent to the police.
IIT Mandi Registrar Dr. Kumar Sambhav Pandey has said that this case is one and a half years old. Action was taken against the professor based on the investigation report. Now the accused professor has appealed to the President to take cognizance of the board’s decision because the appellate authority of IIT Mandi is the President of India.
