Shimla Mosque Row: Muslim panel tells MC, ‘will demolish unauthorised construction ourselves’

Shimla: The recent development in the matter of the alleged illegal construction of a mosque in the Sanjauli area is that Muslim panel has come forward and offered to demolish the unauthorised construction themselves. Municipal Commissioner of Shimla Bhupender Kumar Attri said, ” President of the Sanjauli Mosque and Maulvi, with a 12-member delegation, met me and submitted a memorandum. They requested peace and harmony in their region. They said that their area is peaceful and there has been brotherhood between different communities. So, they have requested that Municipal Corporation should seal that part of the building which is said to be illegal…they also said that if the judgement comes to remove that part, they are ready to do that as well.”

 

Protests have been going on for the last 13 days against the illegal construction of Sanjauli Mosque. The Vyapar Mandal has kept all the shops of the city closed on Thursday in protest against the lathi charge that took place recently.

During this time, the traders of Shimla took out a protest rally from Sher-e-Punjab to the DC office and demanded the dismissal of the SP.

The mosque in Sanjauli was built before 1947. When its permanent building started being built in 2010, a complaint was made to the Municipal Corporation. Now the mosque is 5 storeys high. The Municipal Corporation has given notice to demolish the illegal construction 35 times.

People used to offer namaz outside the mosque, which caused problems in offering namaz. Seeing this, people collected donations and started the construction of the mosque. The land belonged to the Waqf Board. The case regarding the 2nd floor of the mosque is going on in the court. The Waqf Board is fighting its battle.

The latest dispute started on August 31, when a fight broke out between 2 groups and 6 Muslim boys beat up a local businessman named Yashpal. After this, Hindu organizations demanded to demolish the illegal construction of the mosque. After this, Hindu organizations got angry and protested for the third time on Wednesday demanding the demolition of the mosque.

The protesters said that the mosque should be sealed till the court’s decision comes. If this is not done, the movement will be intensified. The spark of protest that started in Shimla in the mosque dispute has now reached Paonta Sahib and Mandi. Due to this the atmosphere is becoming tense.
