Shimla sees 12 km traffic jam as tourist flock to mountains amid peak summer

A large number of tourists are reaching the mountains on weekends in Himachal Pradesh. This has led to traffic jams all around.

Shimla, June 16: A large number of tourists are reaching the mountains on weekends in Himachal Pradesh. This has led to traffic jams all around. A 12 km long jam occurred in Dhali, Shimla on Sunday. A mild jam started at 9 am between Dhali tunnel and Kufri-Fagu. After noon, vehicles were seen crawling at a snail’s pace.

There was a traffic jam between Dhali and Fagu till 10 pm. There was a traffic jam intermittently during the day between Taradevi to Victory Tunnel, Lakkad Bazaar to Sanjauli, Victory Tunnel to Lift. Due to this, tourists as well as local people remained stuck in the traffic jam till late night.

The same situation prevailed on Kiratpur-Manali, Parwanoo-Kasauli road. In such a situation, to avoid traffic jam, tourists can plan their trip to the hills between Monday to Friday instead of weekends. These days the summer season is at its peak. In such a situation, the number of vehicles increases two to two and a half times on centre-days and Sundays

The second major reason for traffic jam in Shimla

Apart from tourists, the other major reason for traffic jam in Shimla was the return of children and their parents who had gone to their villages on summer vacation. Actually, many convent schools in Shimla had a week-long summer vacation. Schools have reopened from today. In such a situation, all the parents should return to Shimla on Sunday.

This also increased the number of vehicles and traffic got disrupted, especially between Kufri and Dhali. A journey of one hour took four to six hours.

Shimla police also had a tough time regulating the traffic. According to the police, on Sunday, the number of vehicles between Dhali and Theog increased two to three times as compared to normal days, because tourists are coming to Shimla to escape the scorching heat across the country, they usually visit Kufri, Mahasu Peak, Narkanda. Due to this the traffic has become uncontrolled.

When the situation worsened, the traffic was diverted to two lanes

After 7 pm, the situation worsened so much that the traffic going towards Upper Shimla had to be stopped for some time and the vehicles coming from Theog side from Mashobra Bifurcation to Dhali Chowk were sent to Shimla side in two-lane.

Occupancy reached 90 percent

Aarge number of tourists are reaching Shimla to escape the heat. Traffic jam is causing trouble. A five-minute journey is taking one hour.

There was more than 90 percent occupancy in Kasauli and 80 to 90 percent occupancy in Manali.
