Shimla: Snowfall has started in the high altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh. A white sheet of snow has spread in Atal Tunnel Rohtang. After this, the movement of vehicles to Rohtang Tunnel has been stopped. Shimla’s Narkanda and Kufri are also experiencing intermittent snowfall since morning. This has increased the slipperiness on the road. Many vehicles are stranded between Kufri and Fagu since morning.
In view of this, Shimla Police has advised to drive carefully. Rain continues in other areas of the state including Shimla city, Kangra and Hamirpur. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall today. This warning has been given to the higher areas of Kangra, Kullu, Chamba and Mandi. Heavy snowfall may occur in these districts in one or two spells.
Yellow alert has been issued in the higher regions of Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur and Kinnaur districts. According to IMD, the effect of Western Disturbance will remain till tomorrow morning. Western Disturbance will weaken from tomorrow afternoon onwards.
There is a possibility of good snowfall at these tourist places too
According to the weather department, Shimla’s famous tourist places Kufri, Narkanda, Manali, Solang Nala, Dalhousie and Sissu may also receive good snowfall tomorrow. However, the weather department’s forecast has proved wrong repeatedly this season. But the department’s forecast has raised hopes among the people of the state that the dry spell will end.
81% less rain than normal in winter season
Due to less rain and snowfall in this winter season, drought like conditions have prevailed in many areas of the state. From January 1 to February 19, there has been 81 percent less rainfall than normal. The normal rainfall during this period is 147.3 mm, but this time only 29.7 mm of rain has fallen.
Advisory to tourists
In view of the activity of Western Disturbance, the Meteorological Department has issued an advisory to the local people including tourists. People have been asked not to go to high altitudes, to be cautious, and to drive carefully on snowy roads.
