VPN used to issue bomb threats in Himachal: Police

Through the mail, threats were given to blow up the State Secretariat, Himachal High Court as well as Hamirpur, Mandi and Kullu Deputy Commissioner Offices.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) was used to issue threats of bomb blasts in Himachal. This has been revealed in the investigation conducted by Himachal Pradesh Police. Those who sent the mail used VPN to hide their identity. An IP address has also been found within the country in the investigation. The police have traced the source after investigating the emails received between April 16 and June 9. Through the mail, threats were given to blow up the State Secretariat, Himachal High Court as well as Hamirpur, Mandi and Kullu Deputy Commissioner Offices.

However, all the threatening emails turned out to be fake. After receiving the mail, the security agencies launched a search operation, but no suspicious object or explosives were found. Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala, Puducherry and Gujarat also received threats through similar emails. On April 15, the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Mandi received an email, in which it was claimed that explosives were kept in many government offices. On April 16, an email was sent to Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, in which it was said that the secretariat building would be targeted.

Two separate emails were received on April 25 as well. On May 2, an email threatening to blow up the Kullu Deputy Commissioner’s office was received. On May 26, another threatening email was received targeting the state secretariat. On June 9, an email was sent warning of an attack by suicide bombers armed with IEDs targeting the High Court. The Deputy Commissioner’s offices of Chamba and Hamirpur were also threatened to be blown up with bombs.
