Yellow alert of heatwave in Himachal from today; rain expected from 8th

A heat wave alert has been issued in Himachal Pradesh for the next 72 hours. Today and tomorrow, there is a yellow alert in Kullu, Mandi and Solan districts, while a heat wave warning has been issued in Kangra district the day after.

For the first time in this season, an alert has been issued regarding heat wave.

It is obvious that the heat will increase in the plains from today. People will have to be cautious while going out of their homes during the day. According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), there may be relief from the heatwave from 8 to 10 April. There are chances of rain in the state during these three days. Especially on 9 April, rain is expected in most parts of the state.

Understand here what is heatwave?

According to IMD, when the temperature increases and the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees in plains, 30 degrees in hilly areas and 37 degrees in coastal areas, the respective areas are considered to be in the grip of heatwave.

Similarly, when the temperature in an area rises 4.5 to 6 degrees above normal, it is declared a heatwave area. During this time, people in these areas are troubled by intense heat and hot winds.

What causes heatwaves?

According to the IMD, if hot and dry winds blow from northwest India, the sky remains clear. Similarly, if there is a drop in humidity, the temperature increases. Due to this, heatwaves reach severe levels in some areas for a few days. Apart from this, rising temperatures are also the reason for increased solar radiation and a high pressure area over parts of mid-western India. This leads to more heatwaves here.

Are heatwaves deadly?

Dehydration (lack of water in the body) due to excessive sweating during a heatwave can even kill a person. Similarly, changes in sodium and potassium concentrations in the blood can confuse the heart and nerve cells. This causes problems in breathing and blood flow.

Signs of being affected by a heatwave?

According to doctors, a person affected by heatwave may feel weak, have headache, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, feeling tremors, dizziness and muscle cramps. If any of these symptoms are seen, one should immediately consult a doctor. If a person affected by heatwave is careless, he may even lose his life.

How to protect yourself from heatwave?

According to doctors, during a heat wave, one should consume as much liquid as possible and wear light and loose cotton clothes. Similarly, one should not go out in the sun without any reason. If necessary, go out wearing a cloth, cap or handkerchief on the head. While travelling, keep a bottle of water with you and drink ORS solution. Stop consuming intoxicants and eat high protein food.
