A 50‑year‑old Hindu businessman, Khokon Chandra Das, has died from injuries sustained after being brutally attacked and set on fire by a mob in Shariatpur district, Bangladesh. The incident occurred on December 31, when Das was returning home after closing his pharmacy shop in the Keorbhanga area of Kaneshwar Union.
According to local media reports, a group of assailants stopped Das’s auto‑rickshaw around 9:30 pm, dragged him out, stabbed him with sharp weapons, and then doused his body with petrol before setting him ablaze. In a desperate bid to save his life, Das reportedly jumped into a nearby pond to extinguish the flames.
Following the attack, local residents rushed Das to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital due to his severe burns and stab wounds. His condition deteriorated, leading to his transfer to Dhaka for advanced medical care. Despite medical efforts, Das succumbed to his injuries on Friday, three days after the assault.
This tragedy marks the fourth such reported attack on members of Bangladesh’s Hindu community in recent weeks, highlighting a worrying trend of mob violence and targeted assaults against religious minorities in the country.
