Bangladesh: A Hindu shopkeeper in Bangladesh’s Gazipur district was beaten to death while trying to protect his minor employee from an alleged attack, local media reported, citing police officials. The incident has sparked outrage in the area and renewed concerns about the safety of Hindu minorities in the country.
Victim Identified, Details of the Incident Emerge
The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Liton Chandra Ghosh, also known as Kali. He owned Baishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel on Baranagar Road. According to the Bangladeshi daily The Daily Star, Liton Ghosh was at his shop on Saturday morning when a minor dispute escalated into violence.
Minor Dispute Turns Violent
According to police and eyewitnesses, at around 11 AM, 28-year-old Masum Mia entered the shop and began arguing with 17-year-old employee Ananta Das over a trivial matter. Initially, the dispute was only verbal, but it quickly turned into physical violence.
Accused’s Parents Also Involved in the Attack
Shortly afterward, Masum Mia’s parents—55-year-old Mohammad Swapan Mia and 45-year-old Majeda Khatun—also arrived at the scene and allegedly joined the fight. Reports indicate that the three began attacking people inside the shop.
Liton Ghosh attempted to protect the minor employee and de-escalate the situation. However, he himself became the target of the attackers. According to reports, he was struck on the head with a shovel, sustaining serious injuries that led to his death at the scene.
Three Accused Arrested, Investigation Underway
Following the incident, locals apprehended Masum Mia and his parents and handed them over to the police. Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station, Mohammad Zakir Hossain, confirmed the incident to The Daily Star, stating that all three accused have been taken into custody. He said that legal proceedings are underway and the case is being thoroughly investigated.
Growing Fear in Hindu Community, Another Killing Fuels Tensions
This killing comes just a day after another Hindu man was killed in a different part of Bangladesh. On Friday, a man named Ripon Saha, who worked at a petrol station, was reportedly trying to stop a vehicle that was driving away without paying. He was run over by the car, which then fled the scene.
These two incidents have created an atmosphere of fear within the Hindu community. Many see this latest killing as part of a broader pattern of increasing violence and targeted attacks against religious minorities in the country.
