Hormuz Strait Tensions: Iran Says Final Deal Still Distant, Route Remains Shut

New Delhi: The Strait of Hormuz remained closed on Sunday amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that while some progress has been made in negotiations, differences remain on several key issues, and a final agreement remains elusive.

Condition for lifting US blockade on ports

Iran has made it clear that this vital sea route will not be fully reopened until the US lifts the blockade on its ports.

Previously, this route was temporarily reopened after the ceasefire, but due to the US stance, Iran has again adopted a tough stance.

Warning and Rising Military Tensions

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei stated that the country’s navy is ready to face any challenge.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that ships transiting the strait without permission will be considered collaborating with the enemy and could be targeted.

Attacks on ships, India objects

When the route reopened briefly, some oil and gas tankers crossed, but most later returned, and traffic virtually halted.

According to reports, one tanker was fired upon and another was damaged. Meanwhile, India has summoned the Iranian ambassador and lodged a strong protest over the firing on its ships.

The strait is crucial for global energy supplies, transporting approximately 20% of the world’s oil and gas.
