Hoshiarpur Youth commits suicide over wife’s betrayal in Canada

A man from Gaddiwal village, Garhshankar, Punjab, died by suicide after being distressed over his wife’s betrayal. He had sent her to Canada on a study visa using his own savings, but she allegedly refused to return or support him. The deceased has been identified as Amarjeet Singh (25).

According to a police statement by Amarjeet’s father Kishan Singh, Amarjeet married Kulwinder Kaur from Gondpur Jai Chand, Una district, Himachal Pradesh, on January 21, 2024, following Sikh traditions.

Four months later, Amarjeet spent ₹15 lakh to send her to Canada. He later transferred ₹2 lakh twice for her study fees and sent another ₹2 lakh as a gift after she gave birth to a daughter in Canada.

On February 1, 2025, Kulwinder returned to India with the child. Amarjeet picked her up from Delhi airport and brought her to his village. After staying for about 20 days, she left the child behind and returned to Canada. When Amarjeet tried to contact her, she allegedly abused and threatened him, saying she would neither call him to Canada nor let him work there.

Distressed by this, Amarjeet took his own life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan late Friday evening.

Based on Kishan Singh’s statement, Garhshankar police registered a case against Kulwinder Kaur, her mother Kuljeet Kaur, and two others, Surinder Singh and Lakhwinder Singh.
