House roof collapses in Kurukshetra due to incessant rain; couple dies

A husband and wife died after the 15×15 foot concrete roof (lintel) of their house collapsed due to incessant rain in Badondi village, Ladwa, Kurukshetra district. The tragedy came to light on Tuesday morning when their son entered the room carrying tea. He discovered that the entire roof had collapsed and his parents were buried under the debris.

Upon receiving the news, villagers rushed to the scene and managed to pull the couple out after about half an hour of strenuous effort, but both had already succumbed. Preliminary investigations suggest the accident was caused by the collapse of the rear wall—facing the fields—due to the continuous rainfall.

The police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examinations and initiated an investigation. The deceased have been identified as Karnail Singh (50) and his wife Jaswinder Kaur (45); they made a living by farming leased land and had three children.

Son’s discovery sparks alarm

Villager Devender Singh stated that Karnail Singh and Jaswinder Kaur used to sleep in a structure located near their fields. As on any other day, the couple’s son arrived at the room with tea for his parents around 5:30 AM on Tuesday.

He was horrified by the scene that greeted him; the entire concrete roof had fallen to the ground, and his parents were trapped beneath the rubble. Hearing his cries for help, villagers rushed to the spot, and the police were immediately informed.

Breaking through the roof with hammers and cutters

The villagers began rescue operations without delay. They used hammers and cutters to break through the concrete roof. After about half an hour of intense effort, Karnail Singh and Jaswinder Kaur were extricated, but both had already passed away. Subsequently, their bodies were transported to the hospital by ambulance.
