How Walmart’s heirs built the world’s richest family

The Walton family, heirs to the Walmart retail empire, are currently considered the wealthiest family in the world, with an estimated collective fortune that has crossed the half-trillion-dollar mark. According to Bloomberg’s latest rankings of the richest families globally, the Waltons top the list with an estimated net worth of around $513.4 billion, a figure that significantly surpasses most individual and family fortunes worldwide.

The origins of this immense wealth trace back to Sam Walton, who co-founded Walmart in 1962 alongside his brother Bud Walton. What began as a single discount store in Rogers, Arkansas, grew into a retail powerhouse that now operates thousands of stores across the United States and around the globe, generating hundreds of billions in annual revenue. The company’s simple business model — offering low prices and high volume helped it become the largest retailer in the world, employing millions of workers and serving hundreds of millions of customers each week.

The Walton family’s wealth comes primarily from their ownership stake in Walmart. Together, family members own roughly 44–46 percent of the retailer’s outstanding shares, making them the largest individual shareholders in the company. This ownership is managed through family holding structures such as Walton Enterprises LLC and the Walton Family Holdings Trust, which serve as the central vehicles for preserving, managing, and distributing the family’s wealth across generations.

Key members of the Walton family include Sam Walton’s children Jim Walton, Rob Walton, and Alice Walton each of whom has individual fortunes that rank among the highest in the world. Jim Walton, for example, is a businessman and heir with an estimated net worth well over $100 billion, and he also chairs the Arvest Bank Group. Rob Walton, another of Sam’s sons, previously served as chairman of Walmart and remains influential within the family’s business sphere. Alice Walton, notable both for her wealth and her philanthropic work in the arts, founded the Art Bridges Foundation and has donated significant sums to cultural and educational causes.
While the family does not directly manage Walmart’s day-to-day operations, many members retain significant influence through their stock ownership and roles in family investment entities.
