HP Panchayat Elections: Dates likely to be announced on the 21st April; meeting convened

Following the release of the reservation roster in Himachal Pradesh, activity surrounding the elections for Panchayati Raj Institutions has intensified. The State Election Commission is currently engaged in finalizing the election schedule, and it is expected that the official announcement regarding the Panchayat elections could be made around April 21.

Meeting to discuss the election timetable 

In this regard, the Commission has also convened a crucial meeting on April 16 to discuss the election timetable. This meeting will be presided over by State Election Commissioner Anil Khachi. The entire process for conducting elections for the Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zila Parishads takes approximately 30 days to complete, encompassing procedures such as nominations, scrutiny, withdrawal of candidacies, polling, and vote counting.

Elections before May 31

In compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court, the Commission aims to conclude the entire election process by May 31. If the elections are to be completed by May 31, polling for the first phase could be held around May 20 or 21. Consequently, it is deemed essential to announce the election schedule by the third week of April. As soon as the election schedule is released, the Model Code of Conduct will come into force across the state, imposing a temporary moratorium on new announcements and developmental works.
