HRTC Bus Gutted in Fire on Palampur–Chowki Khalet Route, Passengers Escape Unhurt

Palampur: A Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus was completely destroyed after it caught fire while travelling on the Palampur–Chowki Khalet route in Kangra district on Friday. Thanks to the prompt action of the driver and conductor, all passengers were evacuated safely, and no injuries or casualties were reported.

Driver, Conductor Act Swiftly

The bus, belonging to the Palampur depot, was on its scheduled route when smoke and flames were noticed. The driver immediately stopped the vehicle, while the conductor helped passengers disembark before the fire spread through the bus.

Within minutes, the blaze engulfed the vehicle, reducing it to a charred shell. Eyewitnesses said panic briefly gripped the passengers, but everyone managed to escape safely due to the crew’s quick response.

Fire Brigade Brings Blaze Under Control

Local residents alerted the fire department, which rushed to the spot and extinguished the flames. However, by the time firefighters arrived, the bus had already been completely gutted. Traffic on the route was affected for a short period before normal movement resumed.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary reports suggest a possible electrical short circuit, though officials said the precise reason will be confirmed only after a detailed technical inspection.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the maintenance and safety of ageing public transport vehicles, with locals urging HRTC to strengthen regular inspections to prevent similar incidents in the future.
