Kolkata: Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder and MLA Humayun Kabir was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly threatened police and Central forces while accusing the ruling BJP and state police of resorting to polling malpractice during voting in the Rejinagar Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
Kabir repeatedly got into altercations and scuffles with police personnel deployed for security, following which he was arrested and taken to Rejinagar Police Station. He was also seen holding a West Bengal Police sub-inspector by his collar.
Kabir’s son, Golam Nabi Azad, is the AJUP candidate from Rejinagar in the bypoll.
In the West Bengal Assembly polls earlier this year, Kabir won both the Naoda and Rejinagar Assembly seats in Murshidabad district. He later chose to retain Naoda, resulting in the need for a bypoll in Rejinagar.
Humayun Kabir Accuses Police of Polling Interference
Kabir, who is also a voter in Rejinagar, arrived at a polling booth in the morning accompanied by family members to cast his vote.
After leaving the polling station, he spoke to the media and threatened confrontation with the state police and Central forces.
“The police personnel have surrounded my house since this morning. If the police come to beat us, will they let them go? We will confront them with cudgels,” Kabir said.
He also alleged that voters in Rejinagar, particularly those from the minority community, had been harassed by the district police administration since the bypoll dates were announced.
“Houses of common voters have been vandalised and looted. Even, there have been attempts to rob the women voters of their dignity. Today, it seems that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has unleashed his Alsatian dogs in all the polling booths at Rejinagar. We will not allow the ruling party to snatch the voting rights of the common people by using the police. So, I am asking the people of Rejinagar to confront the police with cudgels,” he alleged.
The allegations made by Kabir are claims and have not been independently established.
Rejinagar Sees Multi-Cornered Bypoll Contest
A close contest is underway in Rejinagar, where more than 65 per cent of voters are from the minority community.
The bypoll features candidates from the BJP, AJUP, Congress, Mamata All India Trinamool Congress, Democratic Trinamool Congress, CPI(M) and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP).
A total of 14 candidates are contesting the Rejinagar seat.
As many as 34 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed in the constituency for security during polling.
The Rejinagar bypoll was necessitated after Kabir, who had won the seat earlier this year, chose to retain the Naoda Assembly constituency.
Voting for the Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly bypolls is being held on October 6, with counting scheduled for October 9.
